Viagra, the blue pill that millions of men have taken to treat erectile dysfunction, has been nicknamed "the little blue pill" by some for its powerful impact on blood flow and blood pressure, and doctors say it may help men who take it to live a healthier sex life.
But doctors say the drug has serious side effects, including strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems.
Experts say the drug could increase the risk of a stroke, heart attack and other heart problems, but they say the risks are minimal. Viagra is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
"We don't think Viagra is a miracle drug," said Dr. Nachum Katlowitz, of the University of Texas Medical Branch, in San Antonio, who has researched Viagra for years.
A study published last year in the journal reported that men taking the drug experienced more side effects in comparison to those taking a placebo.
Viagra is a generic version of the popular drug that was approved in 1998 for treating erectile dysfunction. It works by relaxing the muscles in the penis, increasing blood flow to the area, and helping men achieve and maintain an erection.
Patients who take the pill regularly can experience improved sexual performance and satisfaction, and the pill can help patients regain their confidence, Katlowitz said.
The drug is also used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension and can also help with other diseases. It is not approved for use in children.
While Viagra has been used in clinical trials, its safety has not been tested in children and adolescents.
Men who take the drug for impotence have a lower risk of side effects compared to patients who do not take the drug.
But Dr. Katlowitz said the drug has been linked to some health problems, including heart attacks and strokes.
"It may be associated with increased heart risks, but the risk is small," he said.
He said that the drug may be safe in children who cannot take the pill, but he also noted that it should be used with caution in patients with liver problems.
He said Viagra was first approved in the U. S. in 1998 for treating erectile dysfunction.
He said that although the drug is effective in treating erectile dysfunction, it does not provide the same benefits for other medical conditions.
The drug has also been used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, a condition where high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs is reduced.
Men who take the drug for this condition may experience side effects such as dizziness, fainting, visual disturbances and fainting.
A study published in the August issue of the journal Sexual Medicine showed that the drug could increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes in patients taking nitrates.
A clinical trial published last year in the journal found that people who took the drug for these conditions experienced a lower incidence of stroke than those who did not take the drug. The researchers also found that patients who took the drug also experienced an increased risk of congestive heart failure.
Researchers said that Viagra may help people with erectile dysfunction and lower blood pressure to normal levels, but the drug should not be used by patients who have a history of heart problems or have other heart-related conditions.
The drug also may cause an allergic reaction to nitrates, which can cause low blood pressure.

In a bid to halt the rampant use of Viagra, the Daily Mail has launched an 'anti-spam' section for the 'female Viagra' which is a product which can be sold for as little as £5.99. The 'anti-spam' section for women has also been targeted.
The Daily Mail has been contacted by a woman in the UK who claims that she was given an 'anti-spam' section by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) which said it had stopped the 'female Viagra' from entering the market.
The MHRA has also said it had stopped the 'female Viagra' from entering the UK due to a number of reasons including the 'women Viagra' being sold on the web which is illegal and can be purchased without a prescription.
It has also issued a public safety alert for the 'female Viagra' which is sold on the web and by other women including online shops.
The 'anti-spam' section is designed to help women in the UK stop the 'women Viagra' and other 'female Viagra' which are sold on the web.
The 'anti-spam' section is also designed to help the MHRA find an online 'pharmacy' that sells the product.
